Winemaker Note

Vibrant Ruby tones with a nice unfiltered appearance.

The perfume is violets, sweet roses, cooked strawberry and red cherry yoghurt. Can smell some really positive developing secondary aromas suggesting forest floor, underbrush, dried mushroom & decaying autumnal leaves, even a little sultana and dried fig. Certainly not wanting for character and interest!

A nice and fat and soft Pinot Noir belly here! Rich character and very full of flavour. Very fine grain polished tannins, delicate oak usage showing excellent integration. Flavours of pomegranate pith, cranberry, cranberry skin, and sweet liquorice on the finish.

Heck of a mouthful and a pretty serious wine! Drinking well and plenty to enjoy about its character as it drinks today. Strongly recommend decanting prior to drinking. Another 5 – 10 years in the cellar will certainly reward patience.

  • From the start of the 2019/2020 growing season things looked promising! Great, even budburst with only a few relatively minor frost events. We went into this critical part of the season in the best shape yet in terms of our organic regime, with full under vine cultivation completed along with extensive spring inter-row cropping to ensure the vines had the best possible start. Conditions through spring were relatively normal; plenty of wind, some rain but not too much! With a classic Martinborough North West/South West flow.

Flowering was very successful and a good sized crop was on the cards! The ripening season was long and dry but not overly hot. If one had to make any complaint at all it may have been that it was perhaps a little too dry! As we practice dry farming there was definitely signs of water stress in the canopy across some of the blocks. Welcome rain arrived just after the start of harvest but in the main conditions for picking were excellent and we had the rare pleasure of picking exactly when we wanted too! I feel strongly that 2020 will go down in the books as a great vintage for Martinborough.

  • We have the honour and privilege of being the custodians of two very special and totally different vineyards, each with it’s own unique geology. On each site are some pockets of brilliant mature vine treasures which produce some very intense fruit. From the really great vintages we produce a small amount of Silver River Pinot Noir to Showcase this fruit. Vintage 2020 was a GREAT vintage for Martinborough!

Each parcel is treated individually in the winery, fermented in a range of 1 – 2 ton open topped fermenters. We don’t, necessarily, employ high levels of “whole bunch “ fermentation. However, in the instance of a strong, balanced vintage we certainly employ some! In this instance around 20% whole clusters were used. Total fermentation and maceration time was between 20 – 25 days prior to gentle pressing followed by maturation in French Oak barrels for 12 months. Following 6 months settling time in tank wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered during the spring of 2022.
